Fowey - sailing, scenery and much, much more.

Fowey is a historic town which has managed to maintain its charm and unique identity.

Although small, Fowey is a thriving port which since the middle ages has supported by trade rather than fishing. with a natural harbour it is still used to transport clay from the docks which are situated about a mile from the town..

At the mouth of the river there are remains of the 14th century Block Houses which housed a chain that could be raised to seal off the harbour from attack. Above the beautiful Readymoney Cove stands the remains of St. Catherine's castle, built by Henry VIII.

Fowey was the home of the author, Daphne du Maurier who lived in various houses in the area and moved to Menabilly - whose beach is featured in her most famous novel Rebecca. Other artists and writers have been attracted to Fowey including the writer Sir Arthur Quiller Couch.

This being the case there is now an annual festival of literature and the arts named after Daphne du Maurier which is held in May ever year and in August there is a week of festivities for the annual Fowey Regatta and Carnival week whose highlights include the spectacular Red Arrows, fireworks displays, carnival and the floating of the giant pasty.

Fowey is also a great spot to explore the river and It is well worth taking a trip up to Golant, St Winnow and beyond.
